As the focus of the wireless world moves from voice to data, Nortel is making a lot of noise to stay in the game. At the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, Nortel and Vodafone Spain provided a peak at a service with speeds of 3.6Mbps – more than twice as fast as basic DSL service. Keep in mind, this is a demonstration as opposed to a trial but it does illustrate how carriers are driving towards higher speeds so they can offer value-added services such as video to increase ARPU. In Canada, Rogers announced a C$330-million HSDPA contract with Ericsson today. Rogers, which operates the largest wireless business in Canada, will start deployment this year.
