  1. Roto Tiller Says:

    Lots in the news today:

“Videotron’s cable telephone service has attracted 283,000 customers since it was launched in February 2005 – most of them coming from Bell Canada.”

I initially reacted to this as positive,
“(MONTREAL, Sept. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/) Videotron was serving 1,521,000 cable television customers in Quebec; including 545,000 illico subscribers. Videotron is also the Quebec leader in high-speed Internet access, with 726,000 subscribers to its cable modem and dial-up services. In addition, Videotron provides residential and commercial telephone service to more than 283,000 customers in Quebec. Since August 2006, Videotron also offers wireless phone service.”

and yet another so what ..
“ZURICH, Sept. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ – TDC Switzerland AG, operating under the brand name sunrise, is supplying anytime, anywhere Internet access using a Nortel(x) (NYSE/TSX: NT) carrier IP solution for network enhancement. New services, aimed at sunrise’s residential and business customers, include the web-based sunrise webphone and multimedia services with wireless and wireline Internet access. These services are believed to be Switzerland’s first commercial SIP-based multimedia services”

“The sunrise enhanced network infrastructure solution delivers Switzerland’s first commercial SIP-based IP telephony service and is based on the Nortel Communication Server 2000 Compact (CS2K) and the Multimedia Communication Server 5200 (MCS5200). In addition, the Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 and the Nortel Switched Firewall provide carrier-class reliable, secure and intelligent network access and routing solution for the converged applications. As well as technology, the Nortel solution included planning, design and integration services from the Nortel Global Services portfolio.

Nortel ranked number one in the global markets for service provider softswitches and gateways for the first half of 2006, according to Synergy Research Group.”

Lastly, with Globewest today, who ever they are, being called the largest here…

“Golden West Telecom, the largest independent telecommunications company serving South Dakota, and Venture Communications Cooperative, an independent…” …while only serving a whopping “47,000” subscribers in SD paired with a “Nortel customer for nearly three decades” almost adds insult to injury

On a different note, they keep saying criminal investigations are ongoing ofr Nortel and this was also news for their peers in crime (Nortel having made #5 on the fraud payout pop-chart).

“Enron’s Fastow sentenced to 6 years
Andrew Fastow, the former chief financial officer of Enron Corp., was sentenced to six years in jail Tuesday after he helped mastermind one of the biggest corporate frauds in history.

    Tuesday, September 26, 2006
JACKSON, Miss. — Former WorldCom chief Bernard Ebbers drove through the gates of a U.S. federal prison in Oakdale, La. on Tuesday to begin a 25-year sentence for his role in the $11-billion (U.S) accounting fraud that toppled the company he built from a tiny telecommunications firm to an industry giant.”
